Interview with a Baroudeur

Edited version of a private ‘question and answer’ interview with one of Muswell Hill Peloton’s founding members.

What exactly is a “baroudeur”?

The Wattmeister: in a cycling context, ‘baroudeur’ means an attacking, punchy rider. Someone who will always attempt to initiate a move, especially into a strong headwind.

What is your second greatest fear?

TW: that Full English Breakfasts will be subject to VAT.

Which cause do you support outside of cycling?

TW: The Campaign for Straight Bananas

What is the most expensive thing you have ever bought?

TW: who told you to ask this question? Was it The Wattmeisterin?

Who would you invite to a dinner party?

TW: Freddy Merckx, Freddy Maertens and Freddy Mercury….(I never forget a name).

How often do you have sex?

TW: surely it’s on Strava?

What is the worst thing anyone has ever said to you?

TW: every Saturday morning Big Mig shouts…”get on the front you lazy git!”.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

TW: my Stephen Roche Special Edition racing bike…shit, can you erase that please? I meant to say The Wattmeisterin, The Wattmeisterlings and The Wattmutt

What is your favourite food?

TW: everybody else’s leftovers.

What keeps you awake at night?

TW: the thought that another rider might beat my time on Ridge Sprint Sign.

What is your favourite smell?

TW: carbon rims after the rain.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

TW: a surfeit of red wine blood cells
